These are paid posts usually of one or two sessions per week and are advertised when vacancies occur. They enable General Practitioners to treat patients under Consultant supervision and thus increase their expertise.
These are similar to the above but are unpaid.
This scheme, which has been established for over 10 years, provides a longitudinal two year training programme with academic modules undertaken at Bristol University. Clinical instruction is given by the local consultant with the Clinical Assistant spending a half-day on alternate weeks treating patients under supervision. Please contact your local Consultant Orthodontist
A clinical attachment can enable you to obtain further tuition on a one-to-one basis. Attachments can be arranged under Section 63 for general dental practitioners in Orthodontics, Oral Surgery and Restorative Dentistry. Please contact your local Consultant.
Vocational training is a method of introducing newly qualified dentists to General Practice where, for the first year, they will be guided by experienced practitioners who are appointed trainers. This arrangement is particularly suitable for principals in General Practice who are seeking an associate and who are able to offer a surgery. Such a practitioner need not have as many patients as would be required for an experienced full-time Associate. The new training year started on 01 August 2005. We have two schemes based at Winchester and Salisbury and both are administered from Severn and Wessex Deanery, Highcroft, Romsey Road, Winchester.
Preparation courses will be held in several centres in Wessex.

KITS has recently been relaunched under the initiative of the President of the General Dental Council. KITS is designed for dentists who are taking time out from clinical practice and who would like to keep up to date. An allowance is paid to retain your name on the Dentists' Register, cover the subscription to a professional journal and retain membership of a defence organisation. For further details please contact Ray Reed, Postgraduate Dental Dean.
Occasionally we are approached by dentists who have been absent from service for a period of time, enquiring about refresher courses. A course "Getting Back to Practice" is held annually at the London Hospital Medical College Dental School. Further details can be obtained from Alan Lawrence, Course Organiser - telephone number 0118 986 8694. Alternatively if you require individual training, the Postgraduate Dental Dean will be pleased to advise you
These bi-annual meetings are held in the Postgraduate Medical Education Department at Salisbury District Hospital and are organised through the Wessex Branch BDA Hospitals Group. They give an opportunity for trainees in the dental specialties to present short papers on projects they have undertaken. All hospital practitioners are welcome to attend.
